VSL or Vorspann System Losinger is a proprietary wire-based post-tensioning system that originated in Switzerland and has been in existence since 1954. Post-tensioning involves inclusion of high tensile strength steel cables, with anchorages at opposing end inside a concrete component before casting (with the tendons separated from the concrete by a duct or sleeve). Once the concrete has reached the required comprehensive strength, the tendons – which are held in place at each end of the concrete component by anchorages are tensioned at the same time that force in the opposite direction is applied to the concrete. This results in compressive stress in the concrete – an internal force that resists the external loads that the concrete elements are subjected to.
